Oirats in the Ilkhanate and the Mamluk Sultanate in the Thirteenth to the Early Fifteenth Centuries: Two Cases of Assimilation into the Muslim Environment

Introduction

One of the main characteristics and consequences of the Mongol conquests of the thirteenth century were the wide-ranging mass migrations across the Eurasian terrain, resulting in the intermingling of different cultures and ethnic groups. With regard to the migration of tribal units, one of the most interesting ques-tions is how they adapted to the changing conditions as they moved out of their usual climatic, cultural and ethnic habitats.
