Foreign tourists banned from Tibet on anniversary of riots

The Chinese government has banned foreign tourists from entering Tibet on the third anniversary of violent anti-government protests in the region.

Anyone who intends to travel to the troubled region requires a special permit but such permits will be refused to foreigners. The ban could last for up to three months.

Travel agencies in the region say they have been ordered not to allow foreign tourists into Tibet in March.

Earlier this year, I visited one of the most improbable places on Earth, the little-known Republic of Kalmykia.

Located on the arid steppe south of Volgograd, Kalmykia is Europe’s only Buddhist republic.

It also bills itself as a Mecca for chess players. It is the headquarters of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), and a suburb has been built near the capital, Elista, expressly for holding tournaments and offering vacation homes to former champions. “Okay, we will see who is a hero during the exams!” the teachers would say, “just you wait!”

However, foolhardy as we were, we did not pay the slightest attention to what they told us. As examtime approached even the most reckless of us grew more docile and quiet. No one wanted to get into conflict with the teachers. Naturally we all wanted to finish school with a normal certificate which would make it possible for us to study at an institution of higher education. The pupils’ activity levels had risen visibly. Everyone zealously tried to improve his or her marks, preparing diligently for lessons, and raising a hand whenever our teacher asked this or that question.
