Foreign tourists banned from Tibet on anniversary of riots

The Chinese government has banned foreign tourists from entering Tibet on the third anniversary of violent anti-government protests in the region.

Anyone who intends to travel to the troubled region requires a special permit but such permits will be refused to foreigners. The ban could last for up to three months.

Travel agencies in the region say they have been ordered not to allow foreign tourists into Tibet in March.

Evening of March 1, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev visited the central khurul of Kalmykia “Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni” – the largest Buddhist temple in Russia and Europe.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who came to the temple accompanied by the Head of Kalmykia, Alexei Orlov, met the head of the monastic community and the Buddhist Republic of Kalmykia Telo Tulku Rinpoche.

Earlier this year, I visited one of the most improbable places on Earth, the little-known Republic of Kalmykia.

Located on the arid steppe south of Volgograd, Kalmykia is Europe’s only Buddhist republic.

It also bills itself as a Mecca for chess players. It is the headquarters of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), and a suburb has been built near the capital, Elista, expressly for holding tournaments and offering vacation homes to former champions. His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Russian Representative Dr. Ngawang Rabgyal visited Elista city, capital of Republic of Kalmykia from 21 to 24th May, reported Central Tibetan Administration (Dharamsala). His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Russian Representative Dr. Ngawang Rabgyal was invited as a guest on the occasion of 400th anniversary of Kalmykia becoming a part of Russian Federation.

Women World Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk was the guest of honor in Elista, Republic of Kalmykia, Russia in December 2008.

FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov offered a horse as a gift to Alexandra Kosteniuk for her win at the recent world championship.

At the invitation of the President of Kalmykia, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, from 11 to 13 December Kalmyk Republic visited the world chess champion Alexandra Kosteniuk, reports KalmykiaNews.

During his visit to the Buddhist republic the world chess champion Alexandra Kosteniuk, met with the students of the Chess Academy of Elista.
