Telo Tulku Rinpoche Appointed Honorary Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Russia

Telo Tulku Rinpoche Telo Tulku Rinpoche, an influential Tibetan Buddhist leader of the Kalmyk people, has been appointed as the new Honorary Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the Tibet Culture & Information Centre (Office of Tibet) in Moscow, Russia.

He will take over as the new Representative once the paper works of the outgoing Representative Dr. Ngawang Rabgyal is complete.

Former Kalon Tripa Venerable Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche visited Elista, the capital of Kalmyk Republic, from 3-6 June at the invitation extended by Shadjin (Head) Lama of Kalmykia and President of Kalmyk Buddhist Union, Rev. Telo Tulku Rinpoche, and former Prime Minster of Kalmyk Republic, Mr.Vladimir Sengleev, reported Central Tibetan Administration. The Chinese delegation visited the Republic of Kalmykia

Central temple of Kalmykia The Chinese delegation is headed by the Director of the Institute of Contemporary China Tibetology Research Center in Beijing, Mr. Lien Syanminem visited the Republic of Kalmykia.

At the request of guests Kalmykia delegation arrived in order to exchange views with their Russian counterparts on the Tibet issue, and religious affairs, and to promote mutual understanding and cooperation between the parties. Monument to Zaya Pandita

Zaya Pandita or Namkhaijamts (1599–1662) was a Buddhist missionary priest and scholar of Oirat origin who is the most prominent Oirat Buddhist scholar.

Zaya Pandita was the fifth son of Babakhan, a minor Khoshut-Oirat prince. After Babakhan converted to Buddhism in the early 17th century, he, like many of the other Oirat princes, wished for one of his sons to enter the Buddhist clergy. In pursuit of his wish, Babakhan chose Zaya to become a bandi (“novice”) monk. In 1615, Zaya journeyed to Lhasa, Tibet where he would study and practice Buddhism, including study under the guidance of the 4th Panchen Lama.

It’s been more than 20 years since the collapse of the USSR and the beginning of the period of genuine religious freedom in Russia. Great changes happened both in the country as well as in the minds and hearts of the citizens during this period. People became interested in religion, and as a consequence felt the need to revive traditional religious systems. These positive changes also happened in the only Buddhist republic of the European part of Russia – in Kalmyk Republic.

For the first time Oirats – Western Mongols, the ancestors of the Kalmyks, gained access to the Tibetan Buddhism in the XIII century, but during that period Buddhism was not widespread. It took firmer root at the end of 16 – early 17 century, during the rise of Gelug tradition, which came directly from Tibet and partly through Mongolia. Read the rest of this entry »

Geshe Wangyal Ngawang Wangyal [ De ]
(Wylie: Ngag-dbang Dbang-rgyal) (c. 1901-1983), popularly known as “Geshe Wangyal,” was a Buddhist priest and scholar of Kalmyk origin who was born in the Astrakhan province in southeast Russia sometime in 1901.

Geshe Wangyal was the youngest of four children and had chosen at age six to enter the monastery as a novice monk. After the Russian Civil War, Geshe Wangyal went to Lhasa, Tibet, where he studied at the Gomang College of Drepung Monastic University in Lhasa until 1935 when he decided to return to his homeland to obtain financial support to complete his studies.
