Earlier this year, I visited one of the most improbable places on Earth, the little-known Republic of Kalmykia.

Located on the arid steppe south of Volgograd, Kalmykia is Europe’s only Buddhist republic.

It also bills itself as a Mecca for chess players. It is the headquarters of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), and a suburb has been built near the capital, Elista, expressly for holding tournaments and offering vacation homes to former champions. Moscow, September 8 (Itar-Tass) – Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, when he steps down as head of the republic of Kalmykia, will remain in the republic to focus on three social and charity projects.

On August 15-16, Head of Republic of Kalmykia, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov visited Trinidad and Tobago where he participated in the opening ceremony of the 1st Caribbean Cup – UMADA Cup.

The idea to hold such tournament was born two months ago during FIDE President’s visit to Cuba at the closing ceremony of Capablanca Memorial.

Inaugural Umada Cup international tournament starting on 14th August

The president of the World Chess Federation and also president of the Republic of Kalmykia, His Excellency Kirsan Ilyumzhinov will be gracing the shores of Trinidad and Tobago for the inaugural Umada Cup international tournament. This will be a special occasion for the chess fraternity as the current FIDE (Federacion Internacional des Echecs) president announced this new tournament-to take place every year in this region–will have an organisation and prize fund of US$40K.

On the territory of the Republic of Kalmykia, in accordance with the investment project, signed between the Government of the Republic of Kalmykia and joint stock company “Falcon Capital” continues the construction of wind farms. The purpose of this project is to construct a Czech company JSC “Falcon Capital” of wind power station with capacity of 150 MW.

Today, July 4, 2010, in Elista (Kalmykia), especially for enrollees in the central temple of “Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni”, was a Buddhist ritual – the blessing of the White Mandzhushri – Buddha of wisdom.

RIA Novosti: Russia’s southern republic of Kalmykia will build a town for Vietnamese immigrants, Kalmyk president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov’s press secretary said.

Buyancha Galzanov said Ilyumzhanov proposed the town be built during a meeting with Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet, and also suggested the town be named after the Vietnamese president, who supported the idea. Read the rest of this entry »
